ORNAP Iloilo Chapter Joins Bombo Medico

We are the last men/women standing. ORNAP Iloilo Chapter Officers with the surgical residents from WVMC and Bombo-Iloilo Staff

For the first time in Bombo Medico, they have included the Surgical Mission as part of their services in their annual medical mission for the service of the Filipinos, most especially to the Ilonggos.

Bombo Radyo-Iloilo is not only known for its brave commentary on air, but to the several public services it offers such as the free medical services and blood-drive that is done yearly to give back to their audience.

From Dental Services, to Medical, Pediatric, OB-Gyne, ENT to Opthalmic Consult – they have it here. Doctors from different institution gathered together in support to station’s goal and serve their fellow Ilonggos. Bombo Radyo had an overwhelming response, when more than came than expected. The University of the Philippines Visayas – Iloilo City Campus was filled with hopeful ilonggos who came to seek for free medical, surgical and dental consult last July 10, 2016.

This year, through the Philippine College of Surgeons, surgical residents and consultants from different hospitals in Iloilo, and ORNAP-Iloilo Chapter joined the momentous event for the first time.  39 young and not-so-young boys underwent circumcisions, and 38 underwent minor surgeries which include excision/incision of cysts, mole and wart removal, and a whole lot more.

ORNAP Iloilo Joins ORNAP’s 42nd Annual Regional Convention and Scientific Meeting

For the first time, ORNAP Annual Regional Convention and Scientific Meeting went out of the historic Manila Hotel and into the new and modern Marriott Hotel in Pasay City. The Grand Ballrooms as is, is already a bit overwhelming to look at, but to have the four grand ballroom opened to accommodate nearly 3,000 perioperative nurses all over the country was completely astounding.

On July 1, 2016, about 70 operating room nurses coming from Iloilo, 14 of which are members of the current board of directors arrived in Manila to represent the province in the Annual Regional Convention and Scientific Meeting. After the registration, some of the officers were invited to join the National Chapter Officers including J&J representatives for the preconvention held at the Manila Ballroom Marriott Hotel.

The OR Nurse Support Program to Advance & Reinforce Knowledge & Skills (S.P.A.R.K.S.), a partnership program of both ORNAP and J&J was discussed briefly. It aims to enhance and integrate the knowledge and skills of nurses on areas of technology & procedure in the operating room through effective transfer of evidence‐based best practices latest technology. Further, they have already begun the activities starting with the Baguio-Benguet Chapter and were ready to share it with the rest of the country in partnership with both the national and local chapters. But what really moved the attendees were the powerful, and inspirational talk that came from their speaker, Mr. Raymund Eugene A. Sanchez. Who shared about passion, faith and his experience that have changed his life in ways he couldn’t even imagine. It was a moving talk that brought tears to some of the people who attended.

On July 2, 2016, the Grand Ballroom was filled earlier with OR nurses coming from different cities and provinces around the country. It started with the processionals by the chapter officers, Iloilo Chapter Officers were donned in our bright yellow hablon and was complete including our three past presidents: Mr. Alex Gatmaitan, Mr. Miguel Angelo Labayen, and Ms. Demelen Gancero, the ORNAP National Presidents, current board of directors and distinguished guests. The entrance of colors by the PUP Cadet Corps followed by the solemn invocation by Evelyn P. Gaffud, RN, the national anthem and then the ORNAP Hymn. The convention was formally opened by Ms. Aurora Aralar, RN, ORNAP National President, and Ms. Lydia B. De Castro, RN, Vice-President and Over-all Chairman of this year’s convention gave her opening remarks. Ms. Aurora Aralar introduced the Keynote Speaker, Federico M. Macaranas, PhD who gave an inspiring and educational Keynote Address.

Attendees were encouraged to put pictures on social media to share their experiences during the seminar. Social media was also used as a venue to ask questions to the speakers of the seminar. This was another first in the convention.

There was a short break to formally open the massive exhibit the National Chapter prepared for everyone, after which, Hon. Marian Grace A. Gascon, Ph.D., RN, Chairman of the Board of Nursing gave her message from the PRC-Board of Nursing. The Plenary Session was filled with so many interesting topics, including a breakaway simultaneous session with another first in this convention. It divided the Grand Ballroom into two, one has a Nurse Administrator Track and the other has a Perioperative Clinician Track – both were interesting and it was quite a dilemma which one should you sit in.

For the third year in the row, Iloilo Chapter once again coveted one of the most prestigious awards given annually – the BEST LOCAL CHAPTER AWARD. The award was proudly accepted by the chapter officers, led by the current president Ms. Charlene Mae Delfin, past presidents, chapter adviser, Mr. Gabriel Naig, and chapter founding adviser, Sr. Marvelyn S. Aquino.

The convention saved the best for last, because July 3, 2016 still has interesting topics that kept the hall filled with nurses. Another first was the Business Meeting being held during the second day, the revisions of the by-laws were accepted along with the PON standards. There was a Brownbag Session in which three Chapters shared the Best Perioperative Practices in their regions. Iloilo Chapter was represented by past president Mr. Miguel Angelo Labayen, one of the proponents of the evidence-based research by St. Paul’s Hospital Iloilo that was presented.

The Closing Ceremonies was filled with excitement as the last batch of raffles were drawn, including the Grand Prize which was a Flat-Screen television. New Set of Officers led by the new president, Ms. Mayo G. Santiago, RN, MAN of East Avenue Medical Center, were inducted by past president, Ms. Redenta C. Mamaclay. It was followed by her inaugural address and the closing remarks filled with gratitude by the ORNAP National Secretary, Mr. Gabriel F. Naig, RN, MAN.

Serving the Community on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is an annual occasion celebrated every 14th day of February. For Christians it is a feast day honoring St. Valentine, but in modern times it evolved into a special occasion where lovers expressed their love for each other through giving of romantic gifts and showing affections to each other.

At Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus, one of the most prestigious school here in Iloilo City, they see Valentine’s Day as a time for sharing love to family and the less fortunate members of the community. As they celebrated their annual Family Day, the energetic and enthusiastic Parent Teacher’s Association of the said school headed by their president Ms. Thelma Servidad organized a Medical-Dental Mission and Blood Letting Activity. ORNAP Iloilo Chapter was very pleased to be invited on the said activity. The mission offers free medical consultations for adult and pedia patients, Cervical Cancer Screening, laboratory check-ups for cholesterol and blood sugar level, electrocardiogram, eye check-up, blood letting activity, and dental check-up which includes dental extraction and distribution of free dental care products such as toothpaste and toothbrush to patients. Free medicines were also given to all qualified beneficiaries of the mission.

We have arrived earlier on that morning witnessing how busy the preparation was. The ORNAP Volunteers helped in the organizing and preparing of rooms, instruments, and other equipments to be used for the mission. At around 8 o’clock in the morning, patients from different walks of life started to come and patiently waits to avail of the free services offered for that day. They were family members of students from that school, teachers, school staff, and student from their adopted school, the Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School.

The ORNAP Volunteers headed to the Grade School area where we are tasked to assist in the Dental consultation and tooth extraction. Instrument disinfection and sterilization, and provision of some sterile supplies were our primary responsibility. ORNAP volunteers also take turns in lending their helping hands on assisting dentists. We served as OR lights, restraints to those uncooperative patients and entertainer to anxious children. After every procedure, ORNAP volunteers never failed to do health teachings. I think it’s already in our system because we nurses do this in our daily job. We feel that it is our responsibility to share the knowledge that we have for the welfare of others. With great teamwork from other health practitioners, we can use our talent and skills not only to make the difference in our lives, but most importantly in the lives of others.

In collaboration with the Parent Teachers Association of Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus, the Student Council, Philippine Red Cross, West Visayas State University Dental Department, volunteer doctors, optometrist, medical technologists, and other supportive members of the team, the activity’s goal of sharing love to others was a success.

Setting the Blueprint for ORNAP-Iloilo 2016

The Operating Room Nurses Association of the Philippines, Inc. – Iloilo Chapter together with the past presidents: Mr. Alex Gatmaitan, Mr. Miguel Angelo Labayen and Ms. Demelen Gancero and adviser Sr. Marvelyn Aquino, SPC held it’s 2nd Strategic Planning last February 9, 2016 at the 5th Floor Conference Room of West Visayas State University Medical Center. The purpose of the said event was to establish clear goals, objectives and strategies as to which direction the organization is presently heading.

This year’s president, Ms. Charlene Mae Delfin presented her thrust: ORNAP Iloilo 2016: Going Beyond Borders – Exceeding Expectations, Making Changes. She stressed that despite the fact that in five years, the organization has a much younger set of officers – it would be to a great advantage as well as a challenge for the chapter. She expects this year’s batch of BODs to have fresh ideas, more enthusiastic and more energetic when it comes to participating in the activities. She also wanted that this year, the ORNAP-Iloilo Chapter will go beyond the usual activities such as surgical mission and do something that is able to make changes in the lives of the members of organization and to the people we help.

Vice President, Ms. Karen Joy Margallo, presented this year’s set of activities which include Fun Run, Movie Project, the much awaited Interhospital Sportsfest, livelihood lecture and gift-giving project.

Sr. Marvelyn Aquino, SPC welcomed the new set of officers and reminded them about the commitment to the organization. She threw the challenge to the new set of BODs of being able to include members from other hospitals without existing BODs in the activities, and not just during the annual convention. Finally, she commended everyone for a job well done in organizing a successful Strategic Planning.

The Strategic Planning ended with an inspiring closing remarks from the secretary, Ms. Concepcion Joy Murcia, thanking everyone for attending and participating in the event. Indeed, ORNAP-Iloilo Chapter is off to a great and promising start this 2016!
